Weekend Watch: Festival in Arlington & Fundraiser Kids' Party in Alexandria
It's the weekend of the annual Clarendon Day Street Festival in Arlington, this Saturday from 12 noon to 7 p.m. We love the Clarendon neighborhood, and it's a great way to enjoy being outdoors with little ones during the nice weather. Lots of food, live music, arts and vendors, and children's activities.
And in Alexandria on Saturday, from 3 to 6 p.m., it's the "Let's Get It Started" fundraising kick-off party for the new Alexandria Soft Playroom, to be housed at the Chinquapin Rec Center. The party takes place outdoors at the Chinquapin Park, 3210 King St. (but will move indoors to the Rec Center if it rains). FREE admission and geared toward children and families: Moonbounces, a ball pit, games, live kids' entertainment, and arts and crafts. Mr. Don performs from 4 to 5 p.m.

Pat-a-Cakes in-store event in Chevy Chase
Pat-a-Cakes is doing a special event at Lemon Drop in Chevy Chase, Saturday, October 6, 10 a.m. to 12 noon. It's a good chance to make a gift for a special someone in advance of the holidays!
Here's a description of the event from Gayle Moseley of Pat-a-Cakes:
"Capture a stage of your child's life forever with a custom ceramic impression of little hands and feet. It takes just a moment to gently press your child's hand or foot in soft clay. Each pat-a-cake is carefully hand-finished and painted in a color of your choice, kiln-fired twice for a lustrous, durable finish and adorned with coordinating ribbon."
To reserve your spot at this in-store event, please call or email well in advance: Gayle Moseley at 202.237.7389 or gayle-at-mypatacakes-dot-com. Lemon Drop is located next to Starbucks and Einstein Bagels at 8530 Connecticut Ave., just inside the Beltway.

World's best lemonade, this weekend in Ashburn
Thanks to DCB reader Jennifer Militello for sharing the announcement of a very special event taking place on Saturday in Ashburn, VA:
WHAT: The Children Helping Children Second Annual Lemonade Stand, supporting Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month (September) and Pediatric Brain Tumor Awareness Day (September 30th). Also benefiting Taylor Love and the Children's Neuroblastoma Cancer Foundation.
WHEN: Saturday, September 22, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
WHERE: In front of Rita's Water Ice, 44050 Ashburn Village Shopping Center, Suite 155.
Jennifer also shared with me the moving story of a local child, two-year-old Taylor Love, who has neuroblastoma, a devastating pediatric cancer.
On September 10, five fathers (including Mike Love, Taylor's dad) set out on a 3,800-mile non-stop bike trip called The Loneliest Road Campaign from Sacramento, CA to Washington, DC. This campaign is an attempt to raise much needed funding and awareness for childhood cancer. Each father in the campaign has a child suffering from neuroblastoma in its fourth stage. Each child only has a 20 to 30 percent chance of survival, with a 50 percent relapse rate. The dads' goal is to raise $3 million for a new treatment they believe will help add years to their children's lives, to raise awareness, and to increase funding to find a cure. Learn more about their effort - and contribute your support - at www.loneliestroad.org.

New on the blog scene: DC Metro Moms
There's a new blog on the local scene. DC Metro Moms officially launches this week, featuring posts from mom-writers who live and work in the Washington, DC area.
The author lineup already features a few names that are readily familiar to me, including the fabulous Devra Renner of Parentopia fame. And they are interested in adding more local mom-bloggers to their lineup! If you are a writer and you'd like to be considered as a contributor, visit the site and contact Jill Asher: jill.asher-at-gmail-dot-com.
The DC Metro Moms Blog is the second offshoot of the popular (and sometimes controversial) Silicon Valley Mom's Blog. http://www.svmoms.com In April 2007, Silicon Valley Moms Blog launched its first sister site, the Chicago Moms Blog.
Happy blogging, and happy reading!
