From clutter to clarity?

The latest installment in Jill Hudson Neal's Washington Post mothering column covers a subject that has been haunting my stressed-out brain in recent days, since learning that we will be moving to a new house next month: "From Clutter to Clarity."

This time, Jill interviews NYC-based organization expert and author Julie Morganstern on how the moms of young children can keep it all together in the face of chaos. (And let's face it...Mothering is all about chaos, even under the best of circumstances!)

Booster up, Virginia!

Breaking news: If you live in (or drive into) NoVa, using a booster seat with your older preschooler and school-age child is no longer just a nice safety suggestion. It's state law. On Friday afternoon, Virginia's governor signed into law a bill that requires the following:

* Children up to age EIGHT YEARS must be properly secured in an appropriate child restraint when riding in a vehicle. (Previously, Virginia's kids could legally (though not safely) ride in a standard adult seat belt at age five.)

* Seat belts may be substituted for children between ages four and eight, ONLY with a written statement from a physician who determines that use of a child restraint system would be impractical by reason of the child's weight, physical fitness, or other medical reason.

This bill goes into effect July 1, 2007. For more about the history of this legislation, click here.

For more about when and how to graduate from a toddler carseat to a booster seat, check out these resources:
"Booster Seats are for Big Kids," from nonprofit advocacy organization SafetyBeltSafe USA

"Child Safety Seats: The Guide for Families, 2007" from the American Academy of Pediatrics

"All Car Seats are Not the Same: Restraints for Larger Children," from Safe Ride News, 2006

Video demos on properly installing car seats & booster seats, from Partners for Child Passenger Safety at CHOP

"Booster Seats for Big Kids", a handy product guide from the National Partnership on Booster Seat Safety

Yes, carpooling will now be trickier until about third grade...but it's worth it for the peace of mind.

Weekend Watch: Child's Play on the Pike

If you have a copy of the first edition of my book, you know that one of my favorite picks was Barston's Child's Play in Chevy Chase/Upper NW DC (5536 Connecticut Ave.), just around the corner from my favorite children's shoe store, Ramer's, and the beloved Avalon Theater. This weekend, Barstons Child's Play opens a NEW LOCATION in Rockville, at Congressional Plaza (1661 Rockville Pike).

Saturday and Sunday there will be special events at the new Rockville store, including storytimes, puppet shows, arts/crafts, and music. Stop by and check out their new digs!

For those of you who don't have the first edition of my book, here's an excerpt from my review of the Connecticut Ave. Child's Play store:

"If you like knowledgeable salespeople who offer to help you and really know their inventory, if you value educational and imaginative toys, and if you prefer to shop with your kids without the overstimulation of a big warehouse, you'll appreciate Barston's Child's Play... This small, independently owned toy store in the District...has a great stock of moderately-priced toys, games, puzzles, trains, dress-up clothes and costumes, arts and crafts, books, and music. They also feature many of the most affordable toys you'd find at a big warehouse store, made by the well-known manufacturers, though their offerings in the 'blaring and electronic' niche are few."

You can reach the new Rockville store at 301.230.9040.

On the magazine rack: Gems from the City Paper & Washingtonian

Hot off the press! The Washington City Paper has published the annual Education Issue, and it's worth checking out - if only for the commiseration. (You're not the only sad sap who loses sleep at night over future schooling.)

The highlights:

"DIY Charter Schools: How to Get a Good Education for Your Children at a DC Public Schools Price"
and the ominously headlined
"How to Fire a DC Public School Teacher"

Speaking of things ominous... A new article in Washingtonian magazine you should read:

Weekend Watch: Everybody loves a parade

Since there's alleged to be a slight "warming trend" chipping away at the ice and snow this weekend, it's worth bundling up and heading to one of the area parades. If you've been reading this blog for a while, you already know how much I like parade-outings for little ones - It's free, it's outside in the fresh air, you can come and go as needed, it's often metro-accessible, and most small children love it.

On Sunday, it's the Chinese New Year Parade in downtown DC, starting at 6th and H Sts. NW from 2 to 5 p.m. There will be food vendors and restaurant specials in the neighborhood, and the parade itself features the traditional colorful dragons, dancers, and marching bands. As well as - and be forewarned if you have a kiddo who is scared of loud noise - the traditional ginormous firecracker.

And on Monday, President's Day - a holiday for fed workers and many others - check out the George Washington Birthday Parade in Old Town! Starts at 1 p.m. and will run about two hours. The biggest of its kind in the country! Starts at South St. Asaph & Wilkes Sts., and the route moves north on St. Asaph from there. For the parade route map, click here.

Banding together for a local family

Happy Valentine's Day! It's an icy-cold one - So here's a heart-warming opportunity for you and your kids to spread some love:

Cal Robbins, one-year-old son of local musicians J. and Janet Robbins, has been diagnosed with the genetic motor neuron disease Type 1 SMA, or Spinal Muscular Atrophy, which kills most children before they reach their second birthday. To read more about Cal's story and see pictures of this beautiful little boy, click here.

The family has limited health insurance coverage and no coverage for the exploration of alternative therapies that may be able to make a real difference. Their friends and colleagues in the DC music and fine arts scene are joining together to help Cal and his parents fight the good fight.

Here's what you can do:

1) Attend the fun-draiser concert and all-ages arts event being sponsored by the Washington City Paper on the evening of Sunday, March 11 at the Black Cat (1811 14th St. NW, DC). ONE HUNDRED PERCENT of ticket sale revenue goes directly to the Robbins family in their time of need. Tix are $!5, and they're already on sale - You can get purchase at Ticketmaster.com, at the Black Cat Box Office (no service charge), or by calling 202.397.SEAT. Hand-screened show posters and indie crafts will be for sale at the show - Making a purchase is another way to donate.

2) If you can't make the show but you can make a donation for Cal, just click here.

A new international school in NoVa?

Thanks to local mamas Angela Velasquez and Mary Kay Alegre for sharing this announcement: A group of bilingual, multicultural parents is trying to gauge interest in opening an international school in Northern Virginia. And they'd like to hear from any of you who want more info, or to get involved in the planning and development:

Washington, DC has a long history of international schools, including the Washington International School and Rock Creek International School. The newest one, which opened its doors last year, is the Coeus International School (CIS). Northern Virginia does not have an international school, and a growing group of parents would like to change that!

Because our vision closely matches that of Coeus International School, a school with a dual-immersion language program in multiple languages, that uses an internationally recognized curriculum, and implements innovative learning methods with an emphasis on a global education and critical and creative thinking, we recently brought our idea of an international school for Northern Virginia to the head of the school, Dr. J. Daniel Hollinger. He considered the idea with great interest and enthusiasm. Dr. Hollinger founded Rock Creek International School and served as its head for 17 years.

Dr. Hollinger and others from CIS will be guest speakers at an upcoming discussion session, sharing info about their school and letting parents and potential funders know what it will take for CIS NoVa to become a reality.

The public is invited to this exploratory meeting:

@ Patrick Henry Library, 101 Maple Ave. East, Vienna, VA 22180
Saturday, February 24
3 to 4 p.m.

To RSVP or join the mailing list, send email to Mary Kay Alegre at: mkalegre (at) verizon (dot) net.

The quest for safe childcare

Have you seen this story about the local two-year-old who wandered away from a daycare center unsupervised and unnoticed Friday evening, toddling into rush hour traffic on Pennsylvania Ave.? Thanks to an observant driver who stopped and pulled him to safety, it had a happy ending. As you might imagine, the parents at this daycare center are enraged.

I don't think it's appropriate or useful for such horror stories to create panic or working-mommy-guilt (lord knows we have enough of that already...). I'd like to use it as an opportunity to share some of the resources available to parents selecting childcare in the DC area, where families are often pressured into settling on the first available spot, because the options are so few and the waiting lists so long.

Some of the tools that can help parents of babies and young children do their research on daycares:

I really like this free, downloadable publication from the National Association of Childcare Resource & Referral Agencies (NACCRRA):
"Is This the Right Place for My Child?: 38 Research-Based Indicators of High-Quality Childcare."

Washington, DC Child Development Council
Virginia Child Care Resource & Referral Network

"Mommy & Me Movies" at Arlington Cinema & Drafthouse

Thanks to 4NoVaMommies listserv moderator Ali DeCourcey for sharing this announcement:

Arlington Cinema & Drafthouse is very much interested in continuing to provide entertainment to families, and has scheduled "Mommy & Me Movies" in the month of March. (Similar to the "Reel Moms" series at other local theaters, where parents of infants can get out and about with their babies during the day - in an environment where you'll be amongst your "own kind" and no one will give you the evil eye if baby starts to cry or needs a diaper change!)

Here are the details:

MOMMY & ME MOVIES
Every Tuesday, 1:30 p.m.
$5.50/adult (Dads invited, too)
Children free
"2nd run" movies (1-3 month delay on new releases)
Limited food menu

The first Tuesday of March (March 6) is "2 for 1 Day." Two moms = $5.50.

This effort will only be a success at the Drafthouse if local parents spread the word - So please forward the info. to your playgroups, moms' clubs, babysitting co-op, etc.

They also have loads of other family-centric entertainment, including live shows by The Great Zuchinni, Mr. Knick Knack, Rocknocerus, the Improv Musical Children's Theater, and Mr. Tony.

Moms Write Motherhood / Dads Write Fatherhood

Heads up, writers and aspiring writers who also happen to be moms and dads... The Writer's Center in Bethesda is offering a writing workshop, "Moms Write Motherhood/Dads Write Fatherhood," running eight Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., starting February 15. And get this - Childcare is provided on-site!

Here's a description of the class:

"A Bring-Your-Child Personal Essay Workshop (childcare provided): If you're a young mom (or dad) with a hunger to write, and an interest in shaping your experience with your child into personal essays for possible publication, this new daytime workshop run by a writing mom is for you.

The Writer's Center will provide fun, stimulating childcare for our little ones while we work close by. Join us as we read and discuss poems, essays, and stories on mothering/fathering, collect experiences and ruminations in journals, and shape these into articulate, compelling memoir. We'll write memoir in different forms -cameo, short-essays, braided-essays, framed narratives - about motherhood/fatherhood, children, life after children, family, continuity, community, connection, disconnection within society — we'll focus on both parent and child experiences.

We'll aim to create focused pieces intended for literary, parenting, and other magazines or online blogs. We'll read, explore, and study theme and technique in poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction as we approach our own writing interests. We'll also explore a few venues for possible publication. Cost is $275 for members and $300 for non-members."

Cool news for one local mompreneur - and anyone who aspires to follow in similar footsteps. Tomorrow's Oprah show, on Friday, February 2, has a "Moms Who Made Millions" theme, featuring entrepreneurial mothers. And there will be a short clip in the show of Alexandria mama and business founder Heather Stouffer, working in the kitchen of Mom Made Foods. (Congrats, Heather!)

There will also be a public message board conversation on the topic (actually, it's already underway, with quite a few questions and comments already posted) at the Oprah website. Check it out.

You can also find out more about Heather Stouffer and Mom Made Foods by watching this clip from local News Channel 9! Did you know that Mom Made is the only producer of certified organic baby foods in the Mid-Atlantic area?
