Weekend Watch, Part 2: The Gulf Coast at the Kennedy Center

Filed Under:

My pick for the weekend... A free, child-friendly event in the District.

On Saturday at the Kennedy Center, it's the free, all-ages Open House Arts Festival from 12 noon to 7 p.m. This year's theme is "Arts Along the Gulf Coast Highway" - featuring cajun, creole, zydeco, Texas "folkabilly," gospel/soul, blues, ballet performance, and funk. Among the many, many free musical performances: Nancy Griffith, Blind Boys of Alabama, The National Symphony Orchestra, The Wild Magnolias, Marcia Ball, and Grupo Fantasma - plus a show from the Calliope Puppets troupe.

Throughout the event there will be Gulf Coast tales in the storytelling tent and roaming costumed characters for photo opps ("Mosby the Kennedy Center Cat,the Symphony Orchestra's "Maestro Mouse," and "Bullseye" the Target Dog.)

On the South Terrace there will be classic New Orleans food for purchase, like crawfish etouffe, jambalaya, and beignets.

Voulez vous le bon temps rouler!

(Also this weekend... At the National Zoo on Sunday afternoon, check out Latino music, dance, and food, plus special animal demonstrations!)
